Diamond Clarity

Diamond Handbook - Clarity. Understanding Diamond Imperfections

What is Diamond Clarity?

Diamond clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions are internal characteristics such as minerals or fractures, while blemishes are external characteristics such as scratches or chips. The fewer the inclusions and blemishes, the higher the clarity grade and the more valuable the diamond.

The GIA Clarity Scale

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) developed the international clarity grading system that is used worldwide. The scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3), with 11 grades in total.

FL (Flawless)

No inclusions or blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10× magnification. These are extremely rare and command premium prices.

IF (Internally Flawless)

No inclusions and only insignificant blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10× magnification. These are also very rare and valuable.

VVS1 and VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included)

Inclusions are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10× magnification. VVS1 inclusions are extremely difficult to see, while VVS2 inclusions are very difficult to see.

VS1 and VS2 (Very Slightly Included)

Inclusions are clearly visible under 10× magnification but can be characterized as minor. VS1 inclusions are difficult to see, while VS2 inclusions are somewhat easy to see.

SI1 and SI2 (Slightly Included)

Inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader under 10× magnification. SI1 inclusions are easily seen, while SI2 inclusions are very easily seen.

I1, I2, and I3 (Included)

Inclusions are obvious under 10× magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance. These grades are generally not recommended for engagement rings.

Types of Inclusions

Internal Characteristics (Inclusions)

  • Crystals: Mineral crystals trapped within the diamond
  • Feathers: Small fractures that look like feathers
  • Clouds: Clusters of tiny pinpoints
  • Pinpoints: Very small crystals
  • Needles: Long, thin crystal inclusions
  • Knots: Diamond crystals that reach the surface

External Characteristics (Blemishes)

  • Scratches: Surface marks from wear or cutting
  • Nicks: Small chips on the surface
  • Pits: Small holes on the surface
  • Polish lines: Fine lines from the polishing process
  • Extra facets: Additional small faces

How Clarity Affects Price

Clarity has a significant impact on diamond pricing. Generally, the higher the clarity grade, the more expensive the diamond. However, the price difference between adjacent grades can vary significantly.

For example, the price difference between FL and IF might be substantial, while the difference between VS1 and VS2 might be more moderate. This is because FL diamonds are extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.

Choosing the Right Clarity Grade

When selecting a diamond, consider your budget and personal preferences. For most people, VS1 or VS2 clarity offers an excellent balance of beauty and value. These grades ensure that inclusions are not visible to the naked eye while keeping the price reasonable.

If you have a larger budget and want the highest quality, consider VVS1 or VVS2 clarity. These grades offer exceptional clarity with minimal inclusions visible only under magnification.

For those on a tighter budget, SI1 clarity can be a good option. While inclusions may be visible under magnification, they typically don't affect the diamond's beauty when viewed with the naked eye.

Clarity and Diamond Shape

Different diamond shapes can hide or emphasize clarity characteristics. Round brilliant diamonds are excellent at hiding inclusions due to their many facets and light dispersion. Fancy shapes like emerald cuts or Asscher cuts have larger, more open facets that may make inclusions more visible.

Professional Grading

Always purchase diamonds that come with a grading report from a reputable laboratory like GIA, AGS, or IGI. These reports provide detailed information about the diamond's clarity characteristics, including a plot showing the location and type of inclusions. This information helps you make an informed decision and ensures you're getting what you paid for.
